  2. in Japan from the mid-12th century until 
  3. 1869, when the feudal system was abolished 
  4. and all samurai pensioned off by the 
  5. government. A samurai was an armed retainer 
  6. of a daimyo (large landowner) with specific 
  7. duties and privileges and a strict code of 
  8. honour.
